Good coffee, good food, good morning

Welcome to

Mae’s Place

We are a small, family-owned fast casual restaurant serving breakfast and lunch 6 days a week from 7am until 2 pm. We are closed on Tuesdays. We have unique, seasonally-themed “specials” as well as our own homemade corned beef hash, giant homemade muffins, Rhode Island famous Johnnycakes, eggs benedict, pancakes, omelets, sandwiches, soups, wraps, and more!

our story

Who is Mae?

The number one question we receive from our customers- who is Mae?

Mae was our great-grandmother.

From the early 1940s until our great-grandfather’s death in the late 1960s, our great-grandmother, Mae, and her husband, Ernest, owned and ran Sherwood’s Diner at 56 Foster Street, in Worcester, Massachusetts. When siblings John and Cassie decided to open their own “diner”, they wanted to honor their late great-grandmother’s legacy.

We are proud to be here to continue “slingin’ hash and eggs” in a friendly atmosphere as our great-grandparents did in their hometown diner.

Fun fact: The Sherwood Diner has recently been refurbished, and now sits in Polar Park as the home of the WooSox Foundation!

Discover Our Menu

Our menu has a wide range of options to satisfy even the pickiest of palates. We compare our style of food to diner food, but we have healthier options available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we make a reservation or call ahead seating? Do you cater?

We do not accept reservations or call ahead seating. We are very small, as we only have 8 tables and 4 counter seats in our building. We work at a fast pace to turn the tables over as quick as possible to give everyone a chance to dine with us. At this time, we do not offer catering services.

Can you accommodate a party of 6+?

We can usually accommodate larger parties on week days. It is tougher for us to accommodate parties 6 persons or larger on the weekends. IF we can, you most likely will be split up at multiple tables, may have different wait staff, and you may not get seated and/or fed at the same time. Again, we are very small, and our largest table size can fit 4 persons comfortably.

Why am I being charged a “Take-Out fee”?

The cost of take-out containers, utensils, condiments, napkins, bags etc. has risen dramatically (double or more!) what they used to be. This fee helps offset the rising cost, and helps us keep the cost of the food/meals lower. Our take-out fee applies to orders $20 and up.

Why am I being charged a “Gratuity fee”?

Any parties of 6 persons or more, and any take-out order over $50 will have a 15% gratuity fee attached to your bill for our hardworking and dedicated staff. Our loyal front of house staff work very hard to ensure you have a great experience at Mae’s Place. They are trained to provide great service to you while you dine-in or take-out at our establishment. Most of our staff have been with us the whole seven years we’ve been open!

If I place a take-out order, and something came up, and I can’t pick it up, what should I do?

Please be courteous enough to call the restaurant to alert us of your inability to pick up the order. You are given a time when you place the order in which your food will be done and ready for pick-up. If it is within that time, we will not expect payment, but if you call after the allotted time given for us to make your order, it would be kind of you to pay for at least half price of the order, as now we are out the cost of that meal that we prepared to order for you, and as a small business, that hurts. If it is a true emergency, we will understand. This has been happening quite often as of lately- orders being placed, prepared, then never picked up. (Note: The service industry is protected under law. If you refuse to pay at a restaurant after using their services, by law, it is considered shoplifting – theft of service.)

Why can’t I sit at a table until my whole party has arrived?

We are very very small (only 8 tables, and 4 counter seats). In order for us to succeed, we have a “method to our madness” to be able to efficiently sit, feed, and turn over tables quickly. Sometimes the other members of your party may hit traffic or something to cause them to be late, and that could hold up a table for longer than needed. We do not want this to sound “rude”, because we want you to enjoy your time with us… BUT we might have been able to sit, feed and turn over the table while you were waiting, and if we lose that business, we could lose THE business!

Can I bring my dog into Mae’s Place?

We fully support and allow ADA trained SERVICE dogs into our restaurant. We do not allow your pet, therapy, emotional support, etc. dog into our building. We are too small, and would never want to make any of our other customers feel uncomfortable- especially people with allergies or a fear of dogs. According to R.I. General Laws, it is illegal for us to allow animals of any kind into our establishment for sanitary purposes, UNLESS they are an ADA trained identifiable service dog performing a service for the customer, and located quietly under the table while the customer dines with us. During the summer we offer outdoor seating, and we allow you to bring your dog with you while dining outside. If your dog is not well trained, is lunging at other customers, or jumping on the table, etc., we will unfortunately have to ask you and the dog to leave.

Please be kind and courteous to our wait staff.

**A substitution is an item being substituted for something that a meal does not come with on the menu.**
